Comments on the new Home Office anti-social behaviour initiative
6/01/2011Melanie Dirom, an Associate in the Social Housing team at Brabners Chaffe Street comments on the new Home Office initiative as to how to deal with anti-social behaviour:
The Home Office this week launched a pilot scheme across a number of police forces to ensure that complaints of anti-social behaviour are dealt with and actioned correctly. Reassuringly Merseyside Police were not included in the pilot, perhaps because they already do what they should? Even though cutbacks to the ASB Taskforce team have been reported, we are in no doubt that tackling anti-social behaviour will remain a priority in our area.
Anti-social behaviour is hardly a new phenomenon. We've had ASBOs since 1998 and one can rarely open a newspaper or log onto the internet without horror stories of “neighbours from hell”. It seems odd that the Home Office deem it necessary to pilot a scheme where the police deal with complaints. Surely this is the minimum that any victim can expect?
Anti-social behaviour ruins lives, it needs to be tackled and respect needs to be restored. People should be able to walk down their street without fear of intimidation. For those brave enough to stand up against anti-social behaviour, they need to know that their complaints will be dealt with correctly. We can not afford another tragedy like Fiona Pilkington in our society and we are entitled to expect that such a basic measure of responding to complaints should be in place.
