Top London lawyers head North to build biggest intellectual property team in Liverpool
18/03/2008
The new arrivals are solicitor Colin Bell from Olswang, a London firm with one of the strongest reputations for intellectual property law in the UK, and associate Matt Brown, from the intellectual property department at Nabarro, a highly regarded practice based in London.
They join partner Nik White and associate Jon Oakley to create the biggest legal team of its kind in Liverpool.
Nik White said: `To have intellectual property specialists of such a high calibre as Colin and Matt joining the team is a major coup for Brabners Chaffe Street and our clients.
`Their arrival from two very reputable London firms is a sign that Liverpool is increasingly becoming an attractive location for the country`s best lawyers.î
Matt Brown has a scientific background, obtaining a degree in biochemistry before converting to law and specialising in IP and commercial law. Cambridge graduate Colin Bell dealt with both contentious and non-contentious IP matters during his five years with Olswang.
Colin added: `With Merseyside staking its claim as a digital centre of excellence and breeding ground for young companies with new, exciting ideas, it is an area with huge potential.
`Commercial and intellectual property issues in Liverpool are too often referred to law firms in Manchester and London, so we hope to offer a significant boost to the provision of advice on a local and regional level.î
Brabner`s commercial and intellectual property team has experienced sustained growth over the past year, with major clients including Emap, Enterprise, Typhoo, Trinity Mirror, The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Eddie Stobart.
The team recently acted for Bizarre Creations, a Liverpool-based software company, on its acquisition by American games publisher Activision. Bizarre Creations is best known for its Project Gotham Racing series which has sold more than 4.5 million copies.
