Charity begins at home for former commission lawyer
9/05/2008
The addition of Stephen Claus, a former Charity Commission lawyer, represents a rare coup for Brabners Chaffe Street LLP and means it is now the only firm north of London to boast a lawyer with such experience.
Liverpool-born Stephen Claus spent almost 14 years at the Charity Commission, working on a wide variety of charity matters, including a lead role in the high profile 1993 case of Scargill v Charity Commissioners.
He returns to his home city determined to use his expertise in charity administration and governance to help the Charities and Social Enterprise Unit at Brabners further strengthen its regional and national reputation.
Recognised in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for his expertise, whilst at the Commission Stephen led the only prosecution to date under the Charities Act 1993 against errant Trustees and since joining private practice has represented national and international charities and established several new charities on behalf of clients.
Stephen also practices ecclesiastical law, and served as deputy registrar for the Diocese of Birmingham. He joins Brabners from a Midlands firm where he has spent the past two years as head of charity.
David Maples, a Partner and Head of the Charities and Social Enterprise Unit at Brabners Chaffe Street, says: “Stephen arrives with an excellent reputation and a track record of proven success in a wide range of charity law issues.
“With this appointment, we are now in an excellent position to grow our Charities and Social Enterprise Unit into a major player in the sector.
Earlier this year, Brabners Chaffe Street was ranked number 27 in the national Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For survey.
