Brabners Chaffe Street plays leading role in transfer window
9/02/2009

The Sports team at Brabners Chaffe Street LLP has further boosted its international credentials after advising on a series of high profile moves in the January transfer window, which closed last night.

The North West based firm scored a major coup by being appointed by Major League Soccer (MLS) - the United States professional soccer league - and LA Galaxy to advise on the loan transfer of David Beckham to AC Milan.

MLS also instructed Brabners Chaffe Street to advise on the international loan transfers of Landon Donovan from LA Galaxy to Bayern Munich, the Brazilian Fred from DC United to Wellington Phoenix and the Mexican star Blanco from Chicago Fire to Santos Laguna (Mexico).

The team also advised long standing client Manchester United on its deals with Partizan Belgrade for Zoran Tošić and Adem Ljajić, including obtaining a work permit for Tošić.

The pair are regarded as two of the brightest prospects in European football, with Manchester United hoping they make the same impact on the Premier League as fellow Serb Nemanja Vidic.

Brabners Chaffe Street also advised Manchester City in its signings of Wayne Bridge from Chelsea and Nigel de Jong from Hamburg SV, as well as Blackburn Rovers on its acquisition of El Hadji Diouf from Sunderland.

Wigan Athletic instructed the team on its acquisition of Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega from Mexican team Club Necaxa, which included an appeal before The FA to obtain the first governing body endorsement for a professional football player in England under the new devolved work permit scheme.

The busy transfer window also saw the firm advising a number of other players and agents including the Italian goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini on his transfer from Chelsea to Tottenham Hotspur.

Matthew Bennett, Partner in the Sports team at Brabners Chaffe Street, said: "Despite the fact that this January transfer window saw generally less activity by clubs than in previous windows, our regional, national and international reputation for specialist knowledge and expertise in football meant that the team was busier than ever. The strength and depth of the department enabled us to deal efficiently with all transfers before the deadline expired."
