Seminar for underpreformers in the workplace takes place in Manchester
8/02/2007EMPLOYERS struggling to deal with underperformers in the workplace are to be given a helping hand with a free seminar in Manchester next month.
Latest figures from Investors in People suggest that as many as three quarters of bosses think some of their staff are poor performers ñ with eight out of ten workers saying the same of their colleagues.
Now a unique seminar dealing with how to look after your most valued staff and get rid of those not pulling their weight is to be held at Manchester`s Bridgewater Hall next month.
The event, which is free, has been organised by law firm Brabners Chaffe Street and PKF accountants and business advisers.
Employment partner at Brabners Chaffe Street, Paul Chamberlain, will lead the section of the seminar dealing with dismissing staff.
He said: `Employing any underperformers brings with it a number of risks.
`Employers who choose to do nothing about it risk angering the hard-working staff they want to retain, while those who choose to act need to be careful they follow the correct procedures or they will end up at tribunal.
`With the maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal rising once again this month, that makes it all the more important for employers to seek advice and do things properly whenever dismissing workers.î
Meanwhile, HR expert Martyn Potter, of PKF, will lead discussions on how best to retain valued staff.
Martyn said: `A recent survey suggests more than eight out of ten employees are actively looking to leave their current job.
"This is compelling evidence that employers need to focus more on promoting loyalty by making staff feel valued and respected.
`It's crucial for employers to recognise and nurture the talent in their ranks if they are serious about safeguarding the future of their businesses.î
The free seminar takes place at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, from 8.30am.
