Free specialist workshops for in-house lawyers
24/01/2011

Building on the success of its seminars held last year, Brabners Chaffe Street is hosting a series of free workshops in Liverpool and Manchester for in-house lawyers focusing in detail on particular areas of business law.

The first workshop in the series is on the Consumer Credit Act (CCA). The workshop will look at the core areas of the Consumer Credit regime, including the changes introduced on 1 February this year as a result of the EC Consumer Credit Directive. The session will include a review of the application of the CCA (including exemptions), the formalities for the form and content of regulated agreements and pre-contract information, and procedural and licensing requirements.

Stephen Roper, a Commercial Partner at Brabners Chaffe Street with specialist knowledge of the CCA comments: “You don't have to be in the business of providing loans, or even operate in the financial services sector, for the Consumer Credit Act to apply to you. The CCA may apply if you allow customers to pay in instalments, defer part of the purchase price for any goods or services you supply or provide goods on hire.

“Businesses which are currently subject to the CCA will have to change their documentation and procedures as a result of the changes being introduced on 1 February. Also, some businesses which used to be exempt from the requirements of the CCA may no longer benefit from that exemption as a result of those changes. Failure to observe the strict requirements of the CCA could result in your agreements being unenforceable and may in some circumstances constitute a criminal offence.”

The CCA workshop, which offers 1.5 CPD, takes place on Tuesday 22 February at Horton House, Liverpool, between 8am and 10am and on Wednesday 23 February at 55 King Street, Manchester, between 8am and 10am.
